Tony Elumelu’s Biography
Tony Elumelu is a Nigerian entrepreneur, philanthropist, and business magnate. He was born on March 22, 1963, in Jos, Nigeria. Elumelu is best known as the founder and chairman of Heirs Holdings, a proprietary investment firm with interests in various sectors including banking, energy, hospitality, and real estate.
Elumelu obtained his Bachelor’s degree in Economics from the University of Lagos in Nigeria in 1985. He later attended the Harvard Business School’s Advanced Management Program in 2003. His entrepreneurial journey began in the 1980s when he established a small trading business immediately after graduating from university.
In 1997, Elumelu led a group of investors to acquire a small and distressed commercial bank in Nigeria, which later became the United Bank for Africa (UBA). Under his leadership as CEO, UBA experienced significant growth and expanded its operations to several African countries, becoming one of the leading banks on the continent. Elumelu served as CEO of UBA from 1997 to 2010.
After leaving UBA, Elumelu founded Heirs Holdings in 2010, an investment company focused on long-term investments in key sectors of Africa’s economy. He also established the Tony Elumelu Foundation (TEF) the same year, which is dedicated to empowering African entrepreneurs through mentorship, training, and seed capital.
Elumelu is a strong advocate for entrepreneurship and believes that empowering entrepreneurs is crucial for Africa’s economic development. Through the Tony Elumelu Foundation, he launched the Tony Elumelu Entrepreneurship Programme (TEEP), which provides financial support and business training to thousands of African entrepreneurs each year.
In addition to his business ventures, Elumelu serves on the boards of various organizations and institutions, including the United Nations Sustainable Energy for All Initiative (SE4ALL), the Corporate Council on Africa, and the Nigerian President’s Agricultural Transformation Implementation Council.
